SES, one of the world's largest satellite operators, have chosen Hiltron HMAM-Ka three-axis motorised antenna mounts for operation at its headquarters in Betzdorf, Luxembourg. Two systems were delivered in January and will be used for Ka band channel monitoring. Ka-band downlinks cover the 18.0 to 22.2 gigahertz frequency range which is becoming increasingly important for satellite downlinks.
The HMAM-Ka is the world’s first three-axis motorised 2.4 metre Ka-band downlink antenna switchable between linear and circular polarisation. It is based on a newly designed Ka-band polariser and incorporates a complete high-precision rotatable satellite antenna mount designed for use in commercial satellite operations. The Hiltron HMAM-Ka satellite antenna mount includes professional-grade motorised drives for azimuth and elevation plus a high-accuracy polarisation drive. It can accommodate reflectors of up to 3.7 metres diameter and is fully compatible with Hiltron's standard HACU antenna positioning system. The HMAM-Ka also incorporates inclined-orbit tracking. To conserve guidance propellant, older satellites are allowed to drift further from their nominal target position than during their main service life. Operators therefore offer greatly reduced transponder capacity pricing. The HMAM-Ka's advanced tracking capabilities enable the antenna to follow these variations in position.
